For most teenagers, a basketball court is simply a place to shoot hoops with friends. For 16 year old Rayan from Katy, Texas, it represents something much more: a chance to reconnect with the sport he loves.

Rayan was born with a congenital heart defect and airway defect. Following open-heart surgery in 2021, complications resulted in cardiac arrest and an anoxic brain injury. The experience changed many aspects of his daily life, including his ability to participate in the team sports that had always been an important part of who he was.

When Rayan shared his wish for a backyard basketball court through the Marty Lyons Foundation, a group of organizations came together to make it happen.

The LandTek Group partnered with the Marty Lyons Foundation and Hellas to create a custom basketball court at Rayan's home in Katy. The project also included ball-stop netting from Sportsfield Specialties and a basketball hoop provided by My Backyard Sports.

Surrounding the court is Pivot®, TenCate's fiber-filled turf system, creating a comfortable space where Rayan can spend time with family and friends while continuing to enjoy the game that has always meant so much to him.

What began as a wish quickly became a collaborative effort involving organizations from across the sports construction industry, all focused on creating something meaningful for one young athlete.

For Rayan and his family, the project is about far more than basketball.

It provides a place where he can stay active, spend time with his siblings, and continue doing something he loves in an environment designed around his needs.

His mother, Jennifer, describes the court as a daily reminder that new opportunities remain possible despite the challenges he faces.

The project also reflects the mission of the Marty Lyons Foundation, which has granted thousands of wishes to children living with life-threatening illnesses since its founding in 1982.

Sports facilities are often measured in square feet, performance standards, or construction timelines. Occasionally, a project reminds everyone involved that their greatest impact is measured differently.

For Rayan, a basketball court represents independence, confidence, and connection. It is a place to play, compete, and create new memories with the people around him.

And sometimes, that is what sport is really about.
